On the pujawali or birthday of the Tanah Lot Temple falling on Wednesday (Feb. 24), for instance, the atmosphere looked so religious because it was also accompanied with psalmodic chanting. A row of pilgrims were seen wearing clean white attires. Women dressed in Balinese customary attires upheld gebogan (offerings) while their hand holding the hand of their child. “The moment of this piodalan is eagerly awaited by visitors,” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot, Toya Adnyana.

Thousands of Hindu pilgrims thronging the temple came from different regions in Bali. From the morning until night, the tourist attraction also denoting a sacred area was crowded by visitors. The line started from the morning till night. Understandably, the piodalan at Tanah Lot also coincided with similar ritual at Batu Bolong and Penataran Temple remaining in the area of Tanah Lot. “At that time, the flow of tourists continued to increase. They came and mingled on the shoreline with the pilgrims,” said Toya.

According to Toya Adnyana, the piodalan perfected to the beauty of the tourist attraction. On that account, many visitors were willing to wait for the ritual for enjoying the tourist area of Tanah Lot. Moreover, they waited all day so as to be able to capture the most favored moment. The piodalan falls every six months or 210 days. “Visitors are excited to see in person the religious procession at Tanah Lot,” he said.  (BTN/015)
