The policy is the course or principle of actions adopted or proposed by the hotel. The policy is required for providing direction for each hotel in achieving its vision.  The policy is usually updated annually, but may be in a shorter time frame when considered necessary.  In implementation of its policy, the hotel needs to spell it out into green hotel programmes that are approved by the GM.

The criterium of Policy and Green Team Organization covers three aspects: Top management commitment, Green team, and Programmes of the green hotel. For the top management commitment, there are three points need to be considered: (1) The availability of policies from top management on implementation of sustainable hotel programmes (such as the policy on energy and water efficiency, minimization of waste or sewage; the policy on management of sustainable and environmentally friendly hotel; the policy on energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction on the hotel operation; etc); (2) Green Hotel policy needs to be communicated on each level, especially onto all  employees; (3) Promotion of green hotel policy to guests (clients) and suppliers.

For the green team, there are three points as the main concerns.  (1) The availability of Green Team for formulating, implementing, and management of green hotel (especially on operational performance,  as well as energy and internal building environment performance). (2) Green team is lead by a senior manager and it should have a representative member from each department. (3) A training and education on management of green hotel is undertaken (management of energy, water efficiency and conservation, and management of waste of the building) or other training related to development of green hotel.

For the green hotel programmes, four things need to be considered: (1) Management policy is spelled out on programmes which contains activities, goals, targets that determined annually.  (2) A meeting is held periodically or regularly by the chairperson of the green team and its team members (minimum once within a couple of weeks) dealing with planning, implementation and evaluation of work or performance of the green team. (3) The programmes formulated have to be disseminated.  It can be carried out through various media (printed, electronic, in a memo). (4) Programme achievements need to be assessed and evaluation needs to be undertaken by the green team.
