The beautiful Pompei city with a high culture disappeared due to the extremely terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Similarly, the Tambora Kingdom vanished due to great eruption of Mount Tambora. The raging eruption of Krakatoa also destroyed the civilization in the vicinity. This is an example of earlier times. Currently when global warming is at issue, some coastal countries start facing problems of severe abrasion. Instead, if this problem continues, it is worried the small countries in the Pacific region, Melanesia and Polynesia having made a profit through tourism will sink. Maldives is also estimated to deal with similar threat. The paradise of tourism will be lost.

Bali is also a small island remaining to rely on revenues of tourism sector. Bali suffered devastating natural disaster due to the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963. Before it, several other eruptions like that of Mount Batur occurred. The most memorable is the anger of Mount Agung. Surrounding areas in Karangasem were destroyed and left suffering. However, on the whole Bali remains to stand firmly. Nature’s fury was not able to make it disappear like the paradise in other areas.

On that account, Bali dubbed as The Last Paradise on Earth increasingly strengthens itself in the tourism sector growing very rapidly. Amid the rapid growth, now appear a lot of problems. They include the very massive land conversion so as to make the agricultural area shrink and other problems including waste, water, population, security et cetera. The problems occurred in Bali are very complicated. Volume of tourist arrivals is increasing every year but does not automatically improve the welfare of population. Concentration of tourism stays in Badung, Denpasar, Tabanan and Gianyar.

Distribution of wealth is uneven. When the tourism development targets the other region, concerns will first appear, not prediction of the rising prosperity. Then, how can this small Bali accommodate the tourism activity growing so rapidly? Not to mention there are plans to reclaim the Benoa Bay that will come with thousands of hotel rooms, restaurants, shopping centers and so on. In addition, there will be a new airport in North Bali, right in Buleleng.

Will Bali sink? Probably it will. If the island does not sink due to a natural disaster, maybe it will do due to the greed of population exploiting the island constantly. Probably Bali will retrace the footsteps of Pompei City as the lost paradise.
