Theme of the Bali Arts Festival 2016 is the Karang Awak. Karang refers to a place and can be a field, moor, village, country or one’s self. While the word awak means one self. It can also refer to ‘possession’ like mine, yours, ours and so forth. Literally, Karang Awak can be defined as a place owned. Since it is proprietary, it must necessarily be coupled with more positive action to give the meaning of what have been owned.
It can be interpreted as ‘loving, making it better, keeping it so as not be bothered by other people, taking care, preventing from damage and so on. There is a maintenance effort. There is also an effort to preserve and protect it so that it looks good, sustainable, and not easily damaged. It may not be damaged by the actions of outsiders or by us or other members who also own it.
The theme featured is an inspiration from a piece of psalmody (geguritan) entitled “Selampah Laku” by the late Ida Pedanda Made Sidemen from Sanur. The phrase “nandurin karang awak” in the psalmody is so meaningful and has a very profound meaning. Nandurin in Balinese language means planting. In the context of planting, it does not only mean to plant but also to nourish and to nurture, so that the plant can thrive. Planting is not necessarily in paddy fields or moors but also within the self. Implanting within the self is carried out by any kinds of knowledge or all kinds of skill in order to be useful for one’s self and the close relatives.
In the current global context, the meaning is very relevant. Karang awak should be planted with any kinds of competence in order to remain competitive. Balinese human must appear in all sorts of professions, quality improvement and competency so that we can come as the winner in any contestation. It’s a fixed price. Do not become a loser on our own land. Do not let other people cultivate ‘our land.’ This love must be nurtured. This land must be kept, maintained and preserved. Many evil hands want this land to fall apart. Then, do something to prevent it.
Please prevent it from happening. On that account, learn more. Plant ourselves with skills, with a strong religious knowledge and understand about the philosophy of science and master the modern and noble science existing today. Cultivate our land as well as possible in the self or the land of Bali. Love, keep and save. This is the substance of the psalmody. It must be interpreted further and understood so that we do not lose our identity. Let plant inside the self, plant in the nature of Bali. If we plant goodness, we’ll also reap goodness.
