Prof. Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiartha, has officially introduced as permanent professor at the Faculty of Performing Arts, the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar in the field of Arts and Cultural Studies. Introduction of the professor took place through the Open Senate Session of the ISI Denpasar at the local Natya Mandala Hall. Now, the ISI Denpasar has a number of professors to make the only art institution in Bali a Center of Excellence.
In the introduction, Prof. Arya Sugiartha delivered a scientific oration entitled ‘Genjek a Balinese a cappella: the Formation and Development.’ “In the decade of the 1990s, genjek art was widely at issue, but now the actualization of the genjek seems to have faded. This is what triggers me to raise back the genjek,” said Prof. Arya Sugiartha amid his introduction as a professor, Thursday (Jun. 30).
Through his brief oration, Prof. Arya Sugiartha invited all the people to reminisce and look back the presentation of the genjek art. “Genjek is a genre of Balinese musical arts applying vocals as the main sound source. In addition, the genjek vocal art also contains literary arts through the lyrics sung. Disclosure of the theme other than lyrics is also reinforced with refined melody, rhythm and expression,” he said.
The event attended by Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, invitees of universities in Bali, humanists, scholars, leaders and community, artists, art maestro and students of the ISI Denpasar also presented genjek show by local lecturers and students. This typical art conveys positive messages framed in a normal story.
Indeed it is not easy to reach the peak of career as a professor. Prof. Arya Sugiartha has passed through the ups and downs during the passage of his life from childhood. This man born on December 1, 1966 at Pujungan village, Tabanan is very active in the art when he was a child. At the age of ten years, he was already able to work on Ramayana ballet with paper-clad and successfully created gallivanting drama gong performance at his home village.
The son of (late) I Ketut Sabda and Ni Wayan Sebab never stopped in achievement. Nevertheless, he was once disappointed when failing to pass on the Indonesia Dance Academy (ASTI) of Denpasar. With the help of Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem, Gede Arya was finally able to attended study at the ASTI Denpasar. His career gradually sped up to the current position as the rector of the ISI Denpasar.
