Buddha statue located at Marga Tengah, Kerta, Payangan, Gianyar, has become a tourist attraction. Local and surrounding communities often visit this statue to simply relax. Children, teenagers and old people often spend their spare time in the area of Buddha statue. Especially on school holidays, national holidays and feast holiday, this attraction is thronged by an ocean of visitors.
Location of the statue is indeed unique namely on a broad plateau. Being in the area of tangerine orchard and forest village, it offers cool atmosphere. Rows of green tangerine orchard look so beautiful to the eye. Natural sounds such as singing of birds, bee sucking nectar of flowers and cattle population in the middle of the moor will make visitors feel at peace. Butterflies, lizards, dragonflies and other animals seem chirpy.
Chief of Marga Tengah customary village, I Wayan Candri, said that the Buddha statue is actually a private property but no one knows its designation. The statue has existed since the 2000s, which may be planned for spiritual activities. However, lately the statue was neglected so it is overgrown by many weeds. “Villagers then take advantage of it as tourist attraction,” he said.
Though it has not been established as a tourist attraction, added Candri, the Buddha statue has been visited by many people especially on national holidays, school holidays and Hindu feast holidays such as Galungan, Kuningan and Ngembak Geni (Nyepi). Local community takes advantage of it a place to unwind. “Surrounding residents also frequently visit this place,” he said.
Buddha statue overlooks the east, like meditating at sunrise to look for enlightenment. Sitting position with the hands in meditation position is commonly called as the cosmic mudra. Both hands overlap. Left hand is placed over the right hand, where the tip of the thumb touches each other to make an oval shape symbolizing reflection.
The Buddha statue is a symbol of Buddhism posing a spiritual expression. Other than as a means for the Buddhists to recall the services of Siddhartha Buddha Gautama as a leading teacher having showed off the way to spiritual freedom, spiritually the statue is considered to have a strong suggestion for the Buddhists. Therefore, many local people also meditate at this place.
The existence of the Buddha statue is certainly very supportive to Kerta village to become a tangerine agro-tourism. This statue will become an alternative tourist attraction, other than tangerine agro being initiated by the village. Moreover, Kerta village has already owned a flower garden having been a famous tourist attraction among foreign travelers. (BTN/015)2 comments
