Foreign roamers as well as artists played quite important role in the introduction and development of Bali tourism in the 1920s. A number of famous artists made a visit to Bali, settled and then disseminated news about Bali as a pristine and beautiful island worth visiting. In short, Bali is then famous as it is today.
In the current era, the power of younger generations, the generation having been familiar with the digital era is believed to be able to play similar role as the roamers or artists in earlier times did. The strength of this younger generation is important to be remembered considering that their potential as the driving force of the tourism sector is considered very significant. Other than in Indonesia, almost all countries relying on tourism target the pocket of these younger generations.
This is one of the points emerging in Focus Discussion Group jointly organized by the Ministry of Tourism and MarkPlus some time ago. The event was attended by almost all tourism stakeholders in Bali from the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association, Bali Villa Association, the Bali Hotel Association, academicians, journalists and so on. Actually many things surfaced at the time, but the most interesting is the role of young people. Other than being enjoyer, they are also expected to become a medium of campaign. It is so easy for them with the products of technology they are familiar with where any messages and tourism information will spread quickly. At least, it is limited to their community first and then spreads to wider community.
On the one other hand, the product as one of the important factors of tourism should be created, maintained and constantly developed with the spirit of innovation. This is the characteristic of the digital generation continuously move to search for something new. But on the other hand, Bali has to stay on track in the development of cultural tourism amid the so rapid development of times. Bali needs to maintain its uniqueness so as to keep attracting travelers.
Bali cannot be directed to another destination just for the sake of pleasing travelers. Thus, amidst of the increasingly permissive Balinese people to any changes, the commitment of the government, people’s representatives, stakeholder as well as the entire community should stick to the initial commitment to develop cultural tourism.
Young generation has become the driving force. They are expected to continuously bring some changes for the better. But please remember, do not let them forget their own identity, native culture namely the Balinese culture itself. The spirit of innovation should not be restrained but must always be directed so as to remain in the framework of Balinese culture imbued with Hinduism. This should remain to be emphasized and maintained. Next young generation of different background must be introduced to local culture. Mutual respect and understanding will result in a new acculturation that will ultimately bring in new creative cultures.(email@example.com)
