While spending your holidays in Bali, have you ever taste the sticky jaja lukis cake? This kind of cake is not ‘painted’ or ‘drawn’ as the name suggests (lukis in Indonesian means ‘painting or drawing’). However, it is a Balinese cake that tastes sticky, sweet and slightly chewy. It has the shape of small triangle and greenish white color.

This cake is classified into consumer-friendly because the ingredients and coloring substance used are from organic herbs. It is made without dyes, sweeteners or preservatives. Similarly, the serving is topped with grated coconut and palm sugar. It will taste better when enjoyed while drinking coffee or tea.

Indeed, it is not easy to get this kind of cake. Other than difficult to get the ingredients, the preparation is also quite complicated. However, stalls at villages, traditional market, pastry shops and some supermarkets have sold it. However, at bakeries and supermarkets this cake has been packed neatly using plastic container. On the contrary, food stalls still serve it manually so that it remains really fresh.

Jaja lukis is made from ingredient like sticky rice. Other ingredients include shredded coconut, salt and palm sugar. The preparation takes a long time. At first, the sticky rice is soaked for about 15 minutes. Prepare the extract water of dracaena leaves. This leaf is used to make the cake taste savory as well as to get natural green color.

Furthermore, it is drained and then filled with salt. After that, it is wrapped in green and clean banana leaf with tablespoon batter for each wrapper. Do not forget to wrap it tightly to get sticky result. Then, boil it for two hours (as boiling rice bag). Take out and drain. To ensure whether the sticky rice has been cooked or not, check by piercing using a pin. When it seems to be hard, take out and drain. Wait until it cools down before serving.

Having been cool, it is ready to serve. First of all, open the banana leaf. Place on a piece of banana leaf evenly. Furthermore, sprinkle with grated coconut that has been mixed with salt and then sprinkle with palm sugar sauce. (BTN/015)
