Related to the passage of Bali tourism started around the 1920s, it is undeniable that many foreign travelers already played an important role in promoting the tourist attractions in Bali they have visited. The travelers stayed at people’s simple homes (later on better known as homestay). At the same time, they also interacted with the locals or homeowners. They gave fresh ideas and new insights on many aspects, especially in the matter of culture at large.
In Kuta, Sanur and Ubud, the interaction was so intense that gave birth to borderless international association. Surely, this happens because they stayed at homestay, in one courtyard though in a different room. Actually, this accommodation was the forerunner, the origins of the contemporary accommodations such as hotel, condotel, apartment, villas and so forth.
At the origin was the homestay. Travelers stayed with home owners. They could have dialogue as well as mutually exchanged ideas, learned, and understood about their respective background. The existing differences did not inhibit but became a very important point in the interaction. It is quite interesting to learn one another on the basis of mutual respect. Context of appreciation was surely very strong at that time so as to produce a new culture mutually supplementing and enriching.
Stories about Le Mayeur at Sanur as well as Rudolf Bonnet, Walter Spies in Ubud and others become an examples of international interaction producing new powerful patterns of kinship and becomes the forerunner how the world will become borderless and live in peace as long as the foundation established is in the equality and mutual respect.
Thus, the existence of homestay or simple inn is one of the elements that helped build Bali as the home to the rapidly growing tourism as it does today. Currently, modern hotels with very luxurious amenities appear in numbers everywhere. Apparently, every corner of Bali Island is no longer separated from the target of investors to build a variety of tourism facilities, especially accommodation. Aside from of Kuta, Sanur and Ubud area where the homestay was formerly so dominant, they also target the areas like Nusa Dua, Lovina, Candidasa and many areas.
Then, how about the homestay? Amid the very tight competition, especially about the room rate and amenities, homestay is trying to survive. Some of their owners claim to be very difficult to compete. So, the fate of homestay in Ubud, Sanur and Kuta come to heave. They are trying to survive in the midst of the ordeal, namely competing against luxury hotels that underprice their room rate. Now, they try to survive with the remaining breath. Can the homestay owners survive?
One of the ways is through government by attempting to protect them with regulations as well as hotel association that really have moral force only. Actually, the government could minimize the growth of hotels and restrict or even forbid the growth hostel having the most potential to shut down homestay.
Then, will the homestay go bankrupt? Of course, it will not. Even though amid the difficulties, some young entrepreneurs of homestay in Ubud coalesced into the Ubud Home Stay Association (UHSA) are determined to survive. Naturally, it is a positive effort that must be supported morally and legally by the government. Amid the diverse markets, there are actually special markets or travelers with special interest looking for real traditional life. This becomes the target market of homestay. By staying with the natives, they will get incredible experience. They will have discussion and explore firsthand about daily life of Balinese people.
Social life and ritual life are what they are looking for. The market is available and may not be underestimated. Now, it just needs to beautify the homestay to narrow the gap with hotels. Of course, the matter of sanitation becomes a major factor. However, physical appearance of homestay in Ubud, for example, is actually not inferior to the hotel category. Indeed, homestay has many added values. We are indeed turning back the clock to homestay, dreaming of the past glories of homestay. Surely, it must remain to work hard in the future because staying at homestay will offer an unforgettable experience for life.
