One upon a time, there were hints in the form of revelation that there would be a medicine that could cure the king. The servants were assigned to go to all directions. After getting tired of wondering here and there, eventually they saw a cloud of smoke from the Batukaru forest. After being approached, the smoke came out from coconut shell. Ultimately the servants asked for further guidance. In short, the medicine looked for has been obtained. At the end, Cokorda Tabanan got his recovery.

Then, on the command of the king, a sanctum named Tamba Waras is established at the location. Tamba means ‘medicine’ while waras means ‘gets recovered’ as ever before. It is believed that whoever saying prayers at the temple will obtain a healing. This belief keeps growing and growing until now.

The temple belongs to one of the Catur Angga temples with the status as the sad kahyangan jagat of Bali. The Tamba Waras temple is included in the jajar kemiri. Those belonging to this temple group are the Muncaksari and the underneath Tamba Waras located at the right side of the Batukaru Temple.

Geographically, the Tamba Waras Temple is located on the south slope of Mount Batukaru, precisely at Sangketan, Penebel, Tabanan. The temple located on the same line as the Batukaru Temple sits on the altitude of about 725 meters above sea level. To get to this temple, pilgrims have to cover a distance of about 22 km from the town of Tabanan. In terms of the temple structure, the Tamba Waras Temple is also nicknamed as the warehouse of universal medicine.

It is estimated to have been established in the twelfth century. Before saying prayers, all the pilgrims should first do self-purificatory rite or melukat at the sapta Ganges shower. Other than melukat at the shower, it is also resumed with the ivory coconut water. After that, the pilgrimage can continue to the main temple. (BTN/055)
