Residents of Palaktiying customary village, Landih, Bangli, held customary Nyepi tradition on Thursday (Mar. 16). Almost the same as Nyepi in general, in this tradition all the residents shall implement catur bratha penyepian or four abstinences, namely amati geni (no fire or light), amati karya (no activities), amati lelungan (no leaving home) and amati lelanguan (no entertainment or passion indulgence). Besides, on the Nyepi Day residents are not allowed to receive guests. If violated, the violators will be subject to sanctions.

Chief of Palaktiying customary village, Wayan Ubung, said that the tradition of customary Nyepi is regularly held every year in the ninth month (March) precisely before the celebration of Nyepi. The tradition of customary Nyepi ritual is held after the implementation of ngusaba tegenan at Dalem Pingit Temple of local customary village. “It is an expression of gratitude to the Creator for all the graces given all this time,” he explained.

Wayan Ubung explained that the tradition of customary Nyepi is held for a whole day from 06:00 and ends the next day at 06:00. During the customary Nyepi, residents shall implement the catur bratha penyepian. “Just like the Nyepi in general, people should not work, should not go out and should not light fire,” he explained.

Other than the mandatory to undergo the four abstinences, during the customary Nyepi, all residents are also prohibited from receiving guests from outside the village. If there are any violations, residents will be penalized with customary sanction, namely a fine in the form of one kilogram of rice per one guest. “So far, there are people who violate the sanction,” he said.

Further, he said that to mark the implementation of the customary Nyepi at Palaktiying hamlet, people will usually put sawen (marker) at the entrance into the house compound. The sawen is in the form of sampian that was previously used in the ngusaba tegenan. To supervise the implementation of customary Nyepi, pecalang or customary security guard will be on duty in the local area during the day. (BTN/kmb)
