Formerly in the area of Gianyar Market there was a man nicknamed Mr. Trash. I wonder who actually his real name is. His work is picking up trash around the market. He gathered it in one place in accordance with his capacity but remained in the market area, too. Some was burned, but often abandoned as such. At that time, the plastic waste was not much as today. They mostly consisted of organic waste.
Did he not have a job or get unemployed? Oh no. He has superiority. He could do anything requested by people mostly in the market areas. Transporting of goods, cleaning stalls, fixing tile or working in paddy field and so on or any odd jobs he could do.
His posture is thin and he has black skin. People around the market have been familiar with him. However, those who did not know him might be afraid of seeing his figure. His body tended to be dirty, while his gums and teeth were blackened due to tobacco. Not infrequently, people considered him crazy. Perhaps, it happens because he was just seen picking up trash. Many people said that he was ‘jobless.’
At that time, there was no garbage worker hired by local government. There was only the ‘crazy’ Mr. Trash who ‘was jobless.’ When asked why he was picking up and collecting trash? He simply answered ‘to make it clean.’ That was all and nothing more. No theory and miscellaneous purposes he told. Similarly, there was no hidden agenda ahead of elections, gubernatorial election or anything else as commonly found today. He is nobody. He is zero, but actually a hero.
No one thought if the typology of Mr. Trash is required so much and very necessary. Regardless of the purpose and intention, we do need the figure like Mr. Trash. He is so concerned about environmental sanitation.
Indeed we see today that so many cleanup actions are undertaken by people. They are held in the market area, temples or other sanctums, tourist attractions such as museums, beaches and so on. We do them all. It is for the sake of sanitation and beauty of Bali Island as a world’s tourist attraction. We do not want Bali to be besieged and then abandoned by travelers.
We are building people’s awareness of sanitation. It needs time and patience. We do need to emulate the character of Mr. Trash. He is not crazy but real action indirectly inspires all people to care for the environment. Unexpectedly, it turns out the thinking pattern of the man considered ‘crazy’ has been far beyond his time. He is indeed a visionary person. (Gde Palgunadifirstname.lastname@example.org)
