Again and again it is about Ubud. According to an institution, the rating of this famous destination around the world is now declining. It drastically fell from the third to ninth position. In terms of rank, there is certainly a drastic decline. Definitely, it is not just about the rating but further why it can happen. Why does it decline?
Let’s use this fact as one of the entrance to the contemporary condition of Ubud. The boards of Ubud Home Stay Associations (UHSA) had a discussion with me some time ago in the editorial office of Bali Post daily newspaper. It discussed about the contemporary condition of Ubud that is often complained by tourists and its own citizens.
Especially, it is related to the problem of traffic crowdedness. Traffic congestion occurs everywhere. Surely, there is a series of problems needing to be handled quickly and correctly. Then, the road infrastructure is not feasible for a world-class tourist destination like Ubud. Another is the increasingly rampant hotel budgets and backpacker hotels having eliminated small home stay business managed and owned by native residents to Ubud. Actually, this homestay is the forerunner to the development of Ubud hospitality industry today.
After the meeting, the contemporary condition of Ubud is increasingly at issue in social media. Then, it was resumed with another meeting or discussion by involving government, police, related associations and of course Ubud observers. It was revealed that Gianyar district government does not provide enough funding for Ubud. Actually, Ubud as a major contributor to the regionally generated revenue and cultural pockets visited many celebrities of the world, has contributed very much.
How could this happen? Previously, I have told the UHSA officials that this had been estimated to happen since 15 to 20 years ago. After that, there was an idea regarding central parking. The other ideas are the restriction for entrance of large buses to the heart of Ubud town, then the hotel is limited, local arts are raised and so forth.
What is the reality? This is what happens today. My advice, and most lovers of this cultural region, is the same as it used to be. If possible, please stop complaining. The problems of Ubud can only be resolved by commitment, integrity, magnanimity, willingness and cooperation of the Ubud residents. Ubud Royal Palace, customary leaders, community leaders, the youth and businessmen must be united and have a strong commitment. Sorry, it will be useless to complain. The problem of Ubud can only be resolved by the Ubud community itself.(Gde Palgunadiemail@example.com)
