Being a bartender is just for a hobby? Ah …., I do not think so. Profession as a bartender is very promising because it is much needed by the industry today. The development of tourism is so rapidly giving the impact on the emergence of many hotels, restaurants and bars in various tourist areas that are always crowded with tourists.

Other than at home, the opportunity is also available overseas as well as on cruise ships. “This provides a great opportunity for a bartender to be creative,” said Bayu Hendra, Chairman of the Indonesia Association of Bartender (ABI) of Bali Chapter.

Due to these opportunities, added Hendra, the school of cruise ship agents also appears in numbers in Bali, especially those providing bartending education. The amount cannot be counted, so that it can give birth to creative and reliable bartenders. “Bartenders, especially from Bali, are highly considered to have high skill, even be trusted by them, so there are a lot of Balinese bartenders working overseas. Few days ago, I met a friend who is working at one of the major cruise ships, where he works in a bar. He told that some bartending staffs are Balinese,” he said.

Hendra who is also a bar consultant is asserted that it proves that profession has quite great opportunity in the future. However, it needs participation and role of the government to support to result in a reliable workforce in the tourism sector, especially in the scope of bartending. “An old bartender proverb says that people coming to restaurants or bars do not necessarily eat, but to drink is sure,” added the man born in Kuta on September 26, 1986.

According to him, Bali bartender has the characteristics distinguishing them from the other bartenders. It happens due to Balinese cultural influences. Similar to dancing, flair bartenders are actually not much different from dancers; they are carried out at different place. Playing and dancing bottles of drinks and then mixing drinks are unique. “So, do not be surprised if bartender competition is always thronged by audience. They do not only skillfully mix the drinks, but also shrewdly dance bottles with musical accompaniment,” he explained.

Hendra then exemplified the Bali Travel News Mocktail event held in Lumintang, not long ago. The event is a great opportunity for young people, regenerating bartenders to show off their skills in playing bottles while mixing drinks.

“We hope this kind of event will support our (Bali) bartender to be the best when facing competition in the national level and even Asian level.  The competition makes their flying hours increase because with frequent competition, their ability will be seen in front of the public maximally,” he concluded.
