The presence of Trash Hero is like a snowball whose movement increasingly rolls out making it bigger and bigger in terms of the number of participants and object of the activity. “Trash Hero Indonesia is a movement caring about plastic waste, which only realizes and moves together,” said Wayan Aksara, Chairman of Trash Hero Saba who is also Chairman of Trash Hero Indonesia Foundation.

Trash Hero is a community caring for plastic waste that continues to invite and inspire people to protect the environment from plastic waste pollution. The participants are like a troop being capable of moving simultaneously that makes the location cleaner and more beautiful. For instance, the chapter that keeps moving is the Trash Hero of Saba Chapter that routinely cleans up the beach area in Gianyar.

Interestingly, the Trash Hero Saba was formed a year ago and until now continues to move social activities of environmental care. In the movement, it often involves local community, customary youth clubs (sekaa taruna) and environment-caring community. It is strongly supported by Gianyar government through the Gianyar Environment Agency.

Coastal tourism area in Gianyar is getting more beautiful. In the past, before this community moved on a regular basis, the existence of the beach area was slum. Even if there were people cleaning it up, it was only in certain area. “Everything needs a process and togetherness of all related components, so that we can realize the environment free of plastic waste,” he said.

The beaches in the south of Gianyar town have become the destination of foreign tourists. They mostly do surfing activities on the beach because the waves are good. International surfing events are also frequently held on this beach, so their sanitation must be well maintained.

Wayan Aksara proactively invited the community to jointly protect the environment from plastic waste pollution. This is done by forming a new chapter that will be responsible in their respective area. “There are several requests for the formation of chapters outside Bali such as the chapter of Sumatera, Sulawesi, Jakarta and Bandung. They will be followed up as soon as possible.”

Currently, explained Wayan Aksara, the Trash Hero already has 11 chapters in Bali and 3 chapters outside Bali namely the Komodo, Tanjung Lombok Utara and Gili Meno chapter. “In the activities, we carry the slogan We Clean, We Educate, and We Change where each chapter moves routinely every week according to the day specified by each chapter,” he explained.

Aksara said when more and more people caring about environment, it will be getting better. Schools are very potential institution in this social movement. Therefore, Trash Hero will always involve schools at elementary, junior high and senior high schools and even universities. “Building awareness needs strong commitment. That is the price we must pay in this movement,” he explained.

In essence, explained Aksara, everything needs a process and measure of togetherness of all related components. Hopefully, the Trash Hero activity is able to free Indonesia from plastic waste and this can be realized in accordance with the government agenda. (BTN/015)
