Following the opening of road access connecting Tangkup to Timbul hamlet, Pupuan, Tegallalang Gianyar by the 100th Indonesian Army rural development program (TMMD); it has strategic value in raising the local potential. One of them is the spring named Tirta Suganing at Tangkup hamlet. Local people believe if the water can help cure a number of diseases, especially the symptoms of mumps.

“Local residents and outsiders believe if this shower has the efficacy of curing symptoms of thyroid disease. It is applied by doing purificatory rite (melukat) at Tirta Suganing shower,” said Made Musir, a resident who has been maintaining the existence of Tirta Suganing shower.

He told that previously the Tirta Suganing was a cave. However, about five years ago a banyan tree grew from inside the cave. Currently, the roots of banyan tree have covered the entrance into the cave. “No one dares to clean up because assuming the growth of the tree is the will of God,” said the man from Tangkup hamlet.

He added that residents frequently do purificatory rite at Tirta Suganing on Kajeng Kliwon. Everyone who comes to do purificatory rite is forbidden to boast that the shower is small. “Formerly an incident happened, water of the shower immediately enlarged and became muddy,” he said.

Besides, if a black snake appears from within the cave, the activity should not be continued at that location. According to Musir, it indicates if the activity is not allowed by the guardian of the Tirta Suganing. (BTN/kmb)
