These painting works look so unique. Scratches and coloring look classic and really traditional. However, they feature contemporary objects, so it looks more beautiful. There is also a classic with typical style of Batuan. Each painting reveals the story about the life in the past, present and the future with full of moral messages. Every scene is scratched on canvas of various sizes.
These are the works of art exhibited at Griya Santrian Gallery, Sanur. It was opened on Friday (Jan. 19) by Anak Agung Rai (Founder of ARMA Museum) and lasts until February 28. The exhibition entitled ‘The Dynamic Heritage’ features 24 works of art by 12 artists denoting the members of the Baturulangung Batuan Painter Association.
The artists are Wayan Budiarta, Pande Dwi Arta, Wayan Aris Sarmanta, Gede Widiantara, Wayan Eka Suamba, Dewa Virayuga, Made Kariana, Made Griyawan, Nyoman Sudirga, Wayan Diana, Made Sujendra and Ketut Sadia. They are both senior and junior artists who jointly introduce and preserve the famous Batuan painting style to foreign countries.
I Made Susanta Dwitanaya told in the news conference last Thursday that ‘The Dynamic Heritage’ seeks to present creative achievements of the twelve artists from various generations of Batuan village, Sukawati, Gianyar. “The twelve artists exhibit different styles of tendencies in terms of thematic and artistic ideas. However, they are still based on the technical foundation in Batuan style treasure,” he said.
The twelve artists, explained Dwitanaya, show off the effort to bring their personal idiolect with departure point in the communal dialect of Batuan. They present Batuan idiolect (technical and aesthetic aspect) as the ‘language’ to tell about the things facing contemporary humanity from the problems of nature, culture, hustles and bustles of the political realm to personal expression.
The twelve Batuan artists are part of a group of Baturulangun artists (Batuan artist group founded in 2012 and intensely engage in activities related to preservation and development of Batuan style painting) showing off the dynamics. This exhibition presents creative achievements of several generations of Batuan artists born in the 1960s until the 1990s.
Ketut Sadia, for example, in the creative process makes a lot of thematic development in his works he perceives various events occurred and reported in the media ranging from the aircraft crash, hustles and bustles of Indonesian football, socio-political situation to the theme around the nature and culture of Bali. One of the works he presents in this exhibition is about the life of fishermen who are sailing at sea.
In this work, Sadia would like to tell about the preservation of nature amid the threats of ecological disasters such as sea pollution. He expresses the idea by presenting the point of view as a Balinese that believes in the aspect of sekala (physical) and niskala (psychical) in which this world does not only consist of tangible reality, but also intangible reality having the metaphysical nature.
For example, sea does not only consist of seawater and fish, coral and other marine plants. However, the Balinese also believe that the sea is also guarded and inhabited by the intangible forces as the sea protector depicted by Sadia with faces with various expressions on the sea surface accompanying fishermen looking for fish.
