Around a month ago, tourists from China were really cranky. Their visit to Bali absolutely reached zero point. Just imagine, approximately 1,500 Chinese tourists arrive every month but now they are totally quiet. Due to travel warning issued by their government, Chinese tourist visit to the Island of the Gods really and totally stuck. The travel warning was issued following the eruption of Mount Agung. Actually, the existence of the highest volcano in Bali is far from the tourist spots usually visited by Chinese citizens. It is away from Kuta, away from Ubud, away from Tanah Lot and so on. Ah well, it is only a story of the past. Yet now, amid the incessant efforts of the government to counter the news, their arrival has begun to appear.
According to a travel entrepreneur that usually deals with Chinese tourists, their potential is huge. As long as the airport is not closed, they will come. After all, in the long run they ultimately know the facts. The existence of Mount Agung and the radius of disaster are very far from where the tourists make their recreation. After all, if the airport is closed, the government and related stakeholders have owned a contingency plan. They will use overland transportation to transport tourists wishing to return to their home country via the nearest airport. It can be Banyuwangi, Juanda or Lombok.
Besides, the government has prepared other convenience. For instance, they will be provided with free one-night stay as well as free transportation to the nearest airport and once meal. This is an anticipatory measure having been prepared. Hopefully, Mount Agung will not erupt anymore and safe for tourists.
Once again, let’s talk about Chinese tourists. If only they knew and if only they understood, there is a very strong historical link between Bali and their country. Possibly they will think twice. Perhaps, they will have other considerations if their government understands about the story of Barong Landung, the story between the royal couple of ancient Sino-Balinese (Balingkang) Kingdom named Sri Jaya Pangus and Kang Ching Wee.
The marriage was realized in the form of Barong Landung culture as what we see today. If only they knew, perhaps this cultural diplomacy of Barong Landung could be used. However, Chinese government still puts forward safety of its citizens above all else. Understandably, soft cultural approach can usually soften rigid attitude. Moreover, the culture is wrapped with the field facts that will scientifically difficult to be argued.
The success of cultural diplomacy is evident in many countries. Moreover, they are supported by cultural and personal attachment of the leaders. Sometimes these are often leading to unexplained and sentimental feelings. So, it will result in ‘brotherhood’ spirit familiarly known in the social concept of Balinese society.
