Residents of Nglanggeran village, Gunung Kidul district, Yogyakarta, are able to live from farming and managing tourism. The agricultural sector even becomes the main livelihood to be worked on, while tourism sector becomes the companion. Natural potential of mountains and plantations is creatively packed into a tourism package. Tour package of Nglanggeran village offers a climbing to the ancient volcano. By using a small car, tourists are invited to visit Nglanggeran reservoir and ends at Gria Cokelat (chocolate house).

Secretary of local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis), Sugeng Handoko, said that since the past few years, his group has limited the visiting guests. His group feared that many tourist visits will even damage the nature. Then, education tourism is increased.

From the post one of the ancient volcano, tourists can see the city of Yogyakarta. There are 5 ancient volcanoes. On the ancient volcano live a community group consisting of seven families, not more and less.

At the next destination, namely the Nglanggeran Reservoir, tourists can see the use of reservoir to irrigate plantations in the region. Although it is only a reservoir, from the location visitors can see the view of ancient volcano and the landscape below. From the reservoir, visitors can also see sunset.

After that, visitors are taken to explore cacao and durian plantation and then make a visit to Gria Cokelat. It is a place where cocoa pods are processed into cacao or chocolate products. Gria Cokelat got assistance and guidance from Bank Indonesia. Previously, local residents only sell cocoa and process it into chocolate toffee. However, with the tool assistance and guidance from Bank Indonesia, Gria Cokelat is able to make chocolate powder with more modem packaging.

A member of Nglanggeran tourism awareness group, Mursidi, said that to complete the tour package, local residents also make homestay. There are a total of 87 homestays managed by local residents. “So, we really empower the community,” he said. When the entourage of Bank Indonesia arrived, there was also a group of school that rent the homestay and enjoyed holiday at Nglanggeran village. (kmb)
