Omed-Omedan tradition of Sesetan Village

Omed-Omedan tradition of Sesetan VillageThe day after Nyepi is known as Ngembak Geni. Meanwhile, some people also call it as the end of abstinence, release of abstinence, dissolution of abstinence namely the end of fasting or upawasa. On the Ngembak Geni, the Hindus should pay a visit to families and relatives to forgive one another and hold dharma santhi or masima krama for maintaining social relationship. Such a moment can be filled with the reading of sloka (compilation of Sanskrit word), song, psalmody or dharma gita (song of dharma), and Hindu sermon about the significance of Nyepi. Masima krama or dharma santhi can be executed either between families or community around one’s residence.

For residents of Kaja Hamlet, Sesetan Village, Denpasar, the Ngembak Geni celebration is filled with a unique tradition and it is eagerly awaited, namely the implementation of Med-Medan or Omed-Omedan. As the name implies, it is an attraction of ‘pulling each other’ performed by two groups ending with a ‘kiss.’ Participants of this attraction consist of single teenagers. On that account, teenagers of Kaja Hamlet, Sesetan, registered as the member of customary youth club (STT) are required to join.

Procedure of implementing the Med-Medan attraction is that the members of each group are specified in advance. If male group has 40 participants, the female will have 60 participants to poise their strength. Those have not got their turn in the first round will be placed as stand-by in the next round. As consequence, all existing members will join the group in turn. Each group has a group head, namely a teenager placed in the front position. Then, each participants lining up in the rear should hug the waist of another participant in front of him or her. When command of the attraction has been started, the male group head holds the hand of the female group.

To make the play run orderly, pecalang or customary security taskforce divides their tasks. Some officers will give command to start the game, mediate and discontinue the game by means of flushing water. Every spraying of water by pecalang, participants must stop pulling their opponent. The flushing indicates the end of the round and every even round (II, IV, VI, and so on) is followed by exchange of position for the next start.

In appropriate with the deals of the committee with all participants, Med-Medan will be terminated by the officer if participants have looked lethargic or the time has reached around 5:00 p.m. Local Time. Status of final, win or lose is not added up and not announced to the public.
