Gianyar Regency known as a tourism region along with its handicraft industry has undergone sluggish condition since last year. Handicraft export value of Gianyar Regency decreases quite significantly. Even, a drastic decline has occurred within the past four months compared to the previous year.

Based on the data of Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency, the decline in export occurred during the year reached 19 percent. Data in 2010 indicated the value of handicraft export reached USD 47.9 million. The export value of handicraft in 2011 reached USD 38.47 million. Aside from the data per year, the decline also occurred in 2012. Within the past four months, Gianyar Regency whose handcraft export value reaching USD 9.13 million declined compared to the four months in 2011 amounting to USD 13.6 million.

The Head of Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency, Wayan Suamba, said the decline had occurred since 2011 as the impact of economic crisis taking place in European countries. Such condition was not only experienced by Gianyar Regency, but also by averagely other regions. The condition had been discussed in a national working meeting chaired in person by the minister. “Amid the decline in the export value, the alternative is relying on domestic market,” he explained.

Strategy in working on the European market was followed up by taking part in exhibition activities such as INACRAFT that involved 30 artisans from Gianyar. Another strategy was making preparation through improvement of product quality and facilitating the market access. In the matter of quality, the existing craftsmen were provided with enlightenment immediately. (BTN/kmb)
