Improvements made by Karangasem Regency in the management of Sukasada Ujung Park tourist attraction received an appreciation from the Department of Culture and Tourism. The tourist object as heritage of the Karangasem Kingdom has been nominated into one of the five finalists from Bali in the Citra Pesona Pariwisata (Cipta) Award 2011.

Head of the Taman Ujung Management Agency, I Nyoman Matal, said not long ago that Cipta Award was an appreciation in the field of tourism for the management of ecotourism, tourist cultural attraction, man-made tourist attraction and eco-friendly tourist object. It was intended to encourage the management so it could improve the quality of the tourist attraction, both in terms of management and existence of the attraction itself. “The purpose is to direct the management of tourist attraction to always pay attention to environmental preservation efforts,” explained Matal.

Cipta Award is organized by Directorate General of Tourist Destination Development, Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Material of the assessment includes the environmental aspects, impacts of tourism activities on the surrounding environment and visitor’s satisfaction. Concerning with the environmental aspect, Matal said, it would measure to what extent was the role of tourist attraction in improving the quality of the surrounding environment. In this regards, it was closely associated with the environmental sustainability such as sanitation and conservation. Furthermore, it also related to the added value provided for local people as well as direct involvement of local people in the tourism activities in the object.

For environmental aspect, the Ujung Park as one of the tourist destinations in Karangasem was able to give a different nuance from the condition prior to the renovation made some eight years ago. Likewise, the Ujung Park could carry out its role as a motivator for the surrounding community to participate and maintain the natural beauty. Similarly, it had more community involvement where one of them was in the management of land located in the southeast side of the park. The management had taken back the function of land into farmland within the park area where its cultivation was handed over to local residents around the Ujung Park. (BTN/kmb)
